Artist Bio

Evalyn Boyd Hines is an American abstract painter. She was born in 1949 in Portland, Oregon.
Evalyn’s parents were traveling farm workers. Her family moved frequently across the US farm belt to work various crops during each harvest season . The Boyd family eventually settled down on a small farm in rural Arkansas. It was while living there, and at a very early age, she discovered her love of drawing. The small rural school she attended did not offer any art classes, so her teachers would often encourage her to draw in exchange for extra grade credits. After moving with her Husband Thomas Hines to Sarasota, Florida, she attended Ringling School Of Art and Design where she received her Bachelor Of Fine Art in painting in 1986. While studying at Ringling she was greatly influenced by one of her instructors, an abstract painter. It was during his guidance and encouragement that she first discovered her love for color and composition.  Evalyn's artwork clearly reflects her early environment, from the colorful quilts made by her mother, to the wild nature present in the rural Arkansas countryside. These early influences may explain her drive to push extreme color palettes until they conjure a visceral display of emotional power in her work. Because of their fast drying time, Evalyn found that acrylic paint best suited her need to get her visual concepts down quickly. Her love of experimenting with different materials, in addition to canvas and paper, led her to try the smooth surfaces of Polycarbonate and PVC, types of plastics that are not ordinarily used for painting surfaces. In 2018 while recovering from a fractured knee, Evalyn began to use her iPad to create digital paintings. Access to this powerful new digital canvas gave her a much more versatile way to explore her interpretations of color and form.  Evalyn's paintings are held in private collections located in the United States, Europe and China.
